The first mountain peak above 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) to be summited by humans was Annapurna. Annapurna is a massif located in the Himalayas in north-central Nepal. The highest peak of the Annapurna massif, known as Annapurna I Main, stands at an elevation of 8,091 meters (26,545 feet).
On June 3, 1950, Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal, both from France, successfully reached the summit of Annapurna I Main, marking the first ascent of an 8,000-meter peak in recorded history. Their accomplishment was a significant milestone in mountaineering and opened the doors to the pursuit of climbing the world's highest peaks. However, the expedition was challenging and filled with hardships, and they experienced severe frostbite during their descent.
Since the successful ascent of Annapurna I Main, numerous climbers have sought to conquer the world's other 8,000-meter peaks, leading to notable mountaineering achievements and the establishment of various routes and records on these massive mountains.
