Annapurna I has one of the highest fatality-to-summit ratios among 8000-meter peaks. The risks include:

Despite the dangers, improved routes on the Southwest Face have been tested in recent years for better safety.

  • Base Camp (4,200m): Located near Miristi Khola, equipped for long-term stays.
  • Camp I (5,200m): 4-hour climb over rock and glacier. Safe zone from avalanches.
  • Camp II (5,700m): Includes 60m rock wall. Most technical section. Fixed ropes provided.
  • Camp III (6,500m): Steep snow and a massive 500m ice wall. Prone to avalanche risk in autumn.
  • Camp IV (7,100m): Final camp before summit. Oxygen used. Preparation zone.
  • Summit Day: Midnight start. Reach summit 7–10 AM. Return to Camp IV or II.

1. How difficult is Annapurna I compared to Everest?

Annapurna is technically more challenging and dangerous due to avalanche risks, steep ice, and unpredictable weather. It is not recommended for beginners.
